Wednesday’s Project: Hockey Socks
My husband and I recently took up ice skating—figure skating for me and hockey for him. Part of his gear includes “hockey socks” which are actually not socks at all, but long tubes that go over the calves to cover his shin guards.
Some men use old-fashioned garter belts to hold up their hockey socks, but my husband chose to use a pair that are suspended from his shorts with Velcro. The trouble was, the socks only had Velcro tabs in the front, so the back of the socks sagged whenever he wore them. He asked if I would be willing to add Velcro to the socks.
We went to Hancock Fabrics and bought some 1.5″ black sew-on Velcro. (2″ would have been even better, but they were out of stock.) I had him try on the socks so I could mark where to place the Velcro, and then I cut two strips that were the same length as the Velcro tabs in the front, roughly 10″ long. I copied the manner in which the front tabs were sewn: leaving the top two inches free and then stitching around the edges, with an X through the center of the Velcro. This resulted in a very sturdy tab that won’t easily tear or come loose. It took perhaps five minutes per sock.
Isn’t it nice when your “hobby” becomes useful?
