When an Old Friend Bites the Dust

Monday’s Mish Mash
When an Old Friend Bites the Dust

Last year, my sewing machine started skipping stitches. At first, it was just one stitch, every so often. Nothing to worry about, right? Then it started skipping more frequently. A few weeks ago, I started a new project that involved a long top-stitched seam. When I finished the seam, I was horrified at how it looked. (I tried to take a photo, but with ivory thread on ivory fabric, it just wouldn’t show up clearly.)

I tried using the blunt tip of my seam ripper to gently pull the stitches taut, one at a time, but even after I tightened the entire seam, it still looked awful. There was no use denying it—my precious sewing machine was gravely ill. I knew it was overdue for a tuneup. In nine years, I’d performed no maintenance beyond my weekly cleaning and oiling routine. But the machine had gone those nine years without so much as a hiccup. Continue reading

Burnout Chiffon

Saturday’s Stash: Burnout Chiffon

Burnout chiffon is a lightweight fabric where a pattern is chemically burned away, leaving a raised opaque area and a burned away sheer area. Often the pattern is floral, with the space in between the floral pattern burned away. Because it’s a floaty, sheer fabric, it’s suitable for a variety of skirts, dresses, lightweight blouses, and home decorating.

Burnout Chiffon Duvet

Sunday’s Someday Projects
Burnout Chiffon Duvet

My bedroom is decorated in a color triad: purple and green, with gold accents. The purple and green are toned with gray. The bedroom walls are a neutral pinkish-beige.

Bedroom Color Swatches

I had a purple comforter for the bed that I really liked. The color was perfect and it was elegant without being too feminine. (i.e.: My husband liked it, too.) However, it got ruined by one of my cats. I’d already purchased twelve yards of a lavender silk dupioni and another twelve yards of a light green georgette for the curtains and I haven’t been able to find a new comforter that matches. Threading Your Sewing Machine

Tuesday’s Tips and Tricks
Threading Your Sewing Machine

Threading your sewing machine is something you’ll need to do often. At the least, you’ll need to change your thread color every time you begin a new project. There are other times you might re-thread your machine, too. If you start having skipped stitches or loops that aren’t caused by tension issues, re-threading your machine will often help. Sometimes the thread doesn’t pass between tension disks properly, or doesn’t catch on the take-up lever or guide hooks. Your machine will behave oddly when this happens and your best bet is to try re-threading it.

Shot Cotton

Saturday’s Stash: Shot Cotton

With shot fabrics, two different colors of yarn are woven together, so that the weft threads are of one color and the warp threads are another. If the two colors are similar, the eye will often blend them together, so the fabric appears to be an in-between color. Blue shot with green, for instance, might appear teal. Other times, an iridescent effect will be produced, where the colors appear to shift as the fabric moves. This is especially noticeable if the warp and weft threads are dissimilar in hue.
